Summers in Naples are intensely warm and while we can turn up the A/C or dive into the pool, our pets rely on us to keep them cool, safe, and comfortable. Many cases of heat-related illnesses occur during the summer months in Southwest Florida, but most are completely preventable. Heat stroke is very dangerous and can be fatal.
What is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke happens when a pet's body temperature rises dangerously high. Unlike humans, dogs and cats don’t sweat. They pant. lie on cool surfaces, and rely on us to maintain a manageable environment.
Signs of Heat Stroke in Pets
Be on the lookout for these warning signs:
Excessive panting or drooling
Bright red gums
Wobbliness or collapse
Lethargy or confusion
Vomiting or diarrhea
If you notice any of these, call your local veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately – heat stroke is a medical emergency.
Simple Ways to Prevent Heat Stroke
Here’s how to keep your pet safe and cool during a Naples summer:
🕐 Time Your Walks
Stick to early mornings or later evenings when the sun is low. Midday heat can turn sidewalks into frying pans for your pup's paws.
🚗 Do Not Leave Pets in Cars.
Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can reach 120°F in minutes. Leaving your pet in the car for “just for a minute” can be fatal.
💦 Hydration is Everything
Make sure there’s always fresh, cool water available – especially during outdoor play or walks. A collapsible water bowl is a must-have for pet parents on the go.
🧊 Cooling Products Help
Cooling mats, frozen treats, or even a kiddie pool in the backyard can provide relief. Some pets also love wearing cooling vests or bandanas.
🐾 Know Your Pet’s Risk
Flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats are extremely vulnerable to heat stroke. Senior pets, animals with heart or breathing issues, and overweight pets are also susceptible. Please take extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses in these individuals.
What to Do in an Emergency
If you suspect heat stroke:
Move your pet to a cooler space immediately
Use cool water to soak the neck, arm pits and groin (not ice cold as this may constrict blood vessels and delay cooling). Place the animal in air conditioning and use a fan to speed evaporation which accelerates cooling.
Avoid spraying with cold water from a hose as pets may accidentally aspirate water and the abrupt temperature change could be catastrophic
Call your local vet or emergency hospital immediately – get ready to take them ASAP
