Halloween is a favorite around here, but it can sneak up with a few unexpected risks for your furry family members. Between the doorbell chaos, chocolate temptation, and the occasional skeleton decor that looks just a little too real, itās a night that requires some extra awareness.
Here are a few tips on how to keep Halloween safe and stress-free for your pets:
š« 1. Keep the Candy Out of Pawās Reach
Chocolate, sugar-free candies with xylitol, raisins, and other treats can be toxic to dogs and cats. Even candy wrappers can be a choking hazard. Keep all treats up high and out of sniffing range ā and let your guests know the rules too!
šŖ 2. Avoid Doorbell Drama
If your pet doesnāt love the doorbell ringing every 5 minutes, set them up with a cozy space away from the front door. Add their favorite blanket, a toy, or calming music to help them chill out while you hand out candy.
š¾ 3. Costumes: Only If Theyāre Cool With It
We love a cat or a dog in a costume, but not every pet does! If your dog or cat finds a costume uncomfortable or stressful, skip the outfit or go for a simple festive collar. Always avoid costumes that restrict movement, hearing, or breathing.
š» 4. Decorate with Caution
Glow sticks, string lights, and animatronic decorations can freak out even the most relaxed pets. Keep cords, fake cobwebs, and small parts out of reach of your pets. Avoid lit candles that pose fire and burn risks.
š· 5. Prevent an Accidental Escape
Doors are opening and closing all night - keep your pets in a secure place and ensure all windows and secondary exits are closed. Make sure your petās ID tag is current, and if they are microchipped, confirm the info is up to date.
